上节课在小组专题演讲中，其中一个小组讲到了”网络的传播形式”， 并讨论到非法网上下载mp3音乐是否对音乐工业是负面的影响。今天我在David Byrne (Talking Head 的主唱）博客上读到了一篇文章，还有他在Wire杂志上写的一篇相关文章，《对新出头音乐人和超级巨星的忠告》。这两篇文章很好说明了在盗版，网上非法下载和音乐工业对音乐人控制的情形下刺激产生了新的音乐发布和消费方式。音乐制造工业不应是仅仅卖卖CD和塑料盒。通过六种现行的音乐发布方式来看，唱片公司对作品版权及音乐创作自由的控制程度越高，消费者要给的钱就越多，音乐人的利润也越薄。
博客上的文章还举了一个成功通过网络粉丝的支持来制作和发布音乐的例子。爵士作曲家Maria Schneider，格莱美奖的得奖者，在ArtistShare的网上发布了了她的新唱片，所有歌曲都可以网上下载。ArtistShare这个网站提供的模式是，一个音乐人在有了专辑制作的计划后，通过ArtistShare募集粉丝的捐赠来为这个专辑筹备录音和制作所需的费用。当募集达到了音乐人预定的数额后，这个专辑就能开始制作并最后问世。对于粉丝来说，如果你捐赠了9.99美元，在专辑制作好后就能在网上下载。如果你愿意捐赠更多的话，你就能拿到音乐会门票等。当然，如果没有粉丝基础的音乐人在这种方式下可能永远筹备不到足够的费用。当然这些策略因人和音乐形式而异，不是每个人或乐队都适用。但这些新型的音乐发布和消费方式都在对过去的传统的音乐制造工业进行着改造。
