Let me start by saying that I can see why a lot of people wouldn’t like this book, especially a lot of people who have to read it for school. To many people, it seems like the typical “teenage angst” kind of book, and it’s very easy to think that the whole way through the book. If you learn nothing from this book then you didn’t get the meaning behind it – it’s a blunt statement, either you agree or you don’t. And if you *do* get the meaning behind it, but found it to be boring or repetitive anyway, then that is your opinion. Some people just simply don’t like the same books.
I have to admit, when I first started reading Catcher in the Rye I was a bit struck at why it was considered a classic in literature. With me, I started seeing something deeper when I got to the middle of the book. It isn’t until you start seeing the same things being repeated that you start to notice. The title of my review is a great example. Holden Caulfield is a prime example of questioning youth. Most teenagers aren’t focused on morals, nor do many of them think deeply about what goes on in the world. And the few that do are like Holden; they’re confused, lonely, and scared as hell. So the more I read and the deeper I delved into the meanings behind Holden’s thoughts and ideas, the more I began to understand. Holden Caulfield isn’t just the average 16-year old. He is, yet he isn’t. He *thinks* deeper than the average teenager. He’s still immature in a lot of his thinking throughout the book but overall his character is just this mass of confusion. He seems confused at a lot of things, at why a lot of people are the way they are, yet he himself isn’t perfect. That is what shapes his character. He isn’t flawless, and the author, Salinger, clearly brings that out to the reader. Sometimes Holden contradicts himself – a flaw within himself that is telling the readers that he is human. By developing his character in this way, I saw it as a way to make you both like and dislike him. If you liked

“What you’ve seen in any documentary about any band before or since is how great and wonderful everything is. Its not the truth of it; its hell, its hard, its horrible, its enjoyable to a small degree, but if you know what you’re doing it for, you’ll tolerate all that. Because the work, at the end of the day, is what matters. We managed to offend all the people we were f***ing fed up with”
Thus intones one Johnny Rotten (aka John Lydon) over a credit sequence which emulates the opening of the legendary film version of Oliver’s “Richard III” – and Lydon knows of which he speaks because as the teenage front-man of “The Sex Pistols”, probably the singularly most reviled and misunderstood band of all time, he certainly had it harder than most.
To my mind, there’s no two ways about it – “The Sex Pistols” are THE band that broke a fundamental law of physics by literally creating something out of the nothing of economic, social and cultural poverty that was England in the mid-seventies. And in this film, which remains probably the best music documentary ever made (and my personal favourite of all time), you get to hear, in their own words, how they charted a notorious course from being four disparate, penniless teenagers hanging around a rubber-ware shop on the King’s Road to being banned from playing in the UK and pursued around the US by the CIA and FBI because they were considered such a threat to the establishment.
Listening to Lydon, Cook, Jones, Matlock and Vicious (in absentia) recounting their tale in silhouette over a wealth of material cobbled together from the films “DOA” and “The Great Rock And Rock Swindle”, as well as hours of never before seen archive footage, gives you a devastatingly honest insight into not only the times and circumstances that formed them, but also the morass of scumbags, groupies, hangers-on and imbeciles that populate the gristle-mill of the music industry to this day.

I initially purchased this watch a month ago. After charging it as described in the manual, the watch was dead. No amount of charging or button pushes could bring it back to life. I notified Amazon and there was an amazing response. They scheduled UPS to pick up the bad watch and sent me a new watch, just one day later. Very good. Sadly after about three weeks and six usages, this watch also failed in the same way as the first one.
The watch either has a design flaw or is just poorly made for two to fail like that.

I ordered Golf Digest through Amazon on 4/29/09. Received a request to write a review today, but we haven’t received the magazine yet. I have to give it the lowest rating because we haven’t seen it.

This whole series is great! I love how the author captures your attention at the very beginning and then keeps me enthralled throughout the entire book. There is action, adventure, and mystery as well as character development. This is an easy read and very enjoyable!

I have used a pedometer on and off for years. When our office offered a fitness challenge, I knew I wanted to participate. The counting and tracking of steps was essential, so my search began for a reliable pedometer. I checked the local “mart” and sports stores, and did research online. I determined the Omron HJ-112 was the best choice. I carefully calibrated the essential information, and attached it to my pants. The first thing I noticed was that it did a good job of not mistakenly identifying random movement as steps which was a plus. I thought that I was getting an accurate reading until I realized it wasn’t actually counting all my steps. My daughter, who was also participating in the challenge, commented that I don’t have much hip movement when I walk and that’s why it wasn’t working properly. She was right! Her pedometer, which cost significantly less, did a far better job of accurately counting her steps.
Another issue I have with this pedometer is the size. It is bulky and less than discreet. A diabetic family member remarked that it resembles a blood glucose meter or insulin pump. I believe the unwieldy size contributes to the fact that it does not stay securely clipped to clothing. I have lost it repeatedly which is annoying, and contributes to the less than accurate step totals.
I would not recommend this pedometer, nor would I purchase it again.

If you loved the movie Twilight, you will love the book all the more. As a mom of teenaged girls and a romance author myself (Spin the Plate), I don’t have much time to read. On a long weekend away at the beach I finally got to this book. How fun to be able to read additional scenes (not in the movie), get into the minds of Bella and Edward, and enjoy a teasingly drawn out romance. The first touch (not even first kiss) doesn’t happen until about 200 pages in. There also are pages and pages of wonderful Q&A in this book on the inner workings of living as a vampire and as a teenaged girl. Absolutely delicious.
